The Lower School, grades 2 through 5, focuses on developing a strong academic base, critical-thinking skills, and making connections across subject areas. At the same time, we instill the habits of self-discipline, respect for others, and collaboration.

We teach to each child's strengths in a genuinely warm, nurturing, and inclusive atmosphere.

Distinctions of your child's Lower School experience:

  • We integrate the curriculum across all subject areas in an accelerated academic program. Students benefit from a phonics-based reading program, challenging and appropriately paced math classes, a Core Curriculum-based social studies program, and "hands-on" science labs.
  • Each grade is divided into three homerooms, with students grouped by ability in language arts and math. The benefits to students: Our small classes give teachers the chance to know their children as individuals and the flexibility to place them where they can learn best.
  • Every day holds something new for students as they move through their busy schedule. In language arts, students become better readers, writers, and communicators. Children choose to pursue either French or Spanish for their Lower School years of exposure to both languages. Everyone learns to communicate in the language of computers. In social studies, students explore ancient and modern cultures and geography. Weekly science labs reinforce class studies ranging from the solar system to plants to animals and human body systems. Math not only builds basic skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, but enables students to develop their abilities as problem solvers and critical thinkers. The visual arts, and performing arts, and physical education programs add important dimensions to each child's day.
  • Parents are partners in the process via regular student progress reports, trimester report cards and comments, and three parent-teacher conferences each year.
  • Extended Day opportunities accommodate working parents' needs between 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Highlights include outdoor play, homework, enrichment programs, crafts, and games.

The cumulative results of the Lower School years: In this nurturing environment, students gain confidence, self-esteem, and an appreciation for community living. Each child is known by everyone, and they look out for one another. Over time, the remarkable camaraderie they develop extends beyond homerooms to the larger school community.
