In the Primary School, our goal is to
cultivate the habits of heart and mind that
carry through a lifetime. In these years, each child
acquires a zest for learning, a curiosity about the
world, compassion for others, and confidence in his or
her abilities.
We meet each child where he or she
is-intellectually, socially, emotionally, and
physically-and respond with meaningful child-centered
learning themes and experiences.
Distinctions of your child's Primary School
experience:
- In homerooms of 14-18 students, teachers
create classes that are small, relevant, and
engaging.
- We encourage students to find confidence
in their individual voices and get hands-on
experience. When children begin to navigate
a computer keyboard, learn to speak Spanish
and French, create art or make music, run
and play, or start to do math, they become
excited about learning.
- Students become better readers, writers,
and thinkers through classes in reading and
writing, French or Spanish, social studies,
science, art, music, computer, library skills,
and physical education.
- Since 2002, the youngest members of the Glenelg
family have been housed in their own new building.
Among the highlights: 12 classrooms as well as a
Learning Lab, computer lab, music, art, and science
classrooms, a library, and a multi-purpose room for
physical education and large gatherings.
- We work very closely with parents and offer
Extended Day opportunities to accommodate family
needs. Frequent communication with parents includes
four conferences and three written reports.
- Primary School students quickly realize they are
part of the GCS community and citizens of the
world-interacting with older GCS students and taking
part in community service activities.
We know that educational goals can be
achieved in leaps and bounds as well as in
small steps. So we guide our youngest students to the
paths most appropriate to their achievement levels.
The Primary School years set the
pattern-in substance as well as style-for all
that follows.
