In the Upper School, our students continue
to build the individual talents, powers, and strengths
that will guide them confidently into college and throughout
life.
You'll immediately notice that students and
teachers are genuinely caught up in the momentum of
learning. Students have opinions. They speak up. They learn from their teachers and from one another.
Distinctions of the Upper School experience:
- Course work integrates humanities, science, math, and foreign languages. A broad range of offerings in these disciplines, and electives in areas such as computer, art, music, and drama, means students can tailor GCS's rigorous college preparatory program to individual interests. Reading, writing, public speaking, and critical thinking are emphasized across disciplines.
- We offer 19 Advanced Placement course; over half of 11th and 12th graders are enrolled in at least one AP course.
- Seniors participate in an interdisciplinary seminar: exploring an essential question in the first semester, developing a thesis in the second semester, and presenting their work to the entire school.
- Values come to the forefront in numerous ways. Each Upper School student carries out at least 95 hours of community service. A student-created and student-enforced Honor Code emphasizes civility and mutual respect.
- Outside of class, our students are meaningfully involved. An inclusive athletics program encourages all students to participate. A lively arts agenda features a fall talent show, an early winter Shakespearean production, a spring musical, and more.
Like our students, our teachers are enthusiastic learners.
Classes average 15 students and every student works closely with a faculty advisor on academic and social matters. Most of all, our teachers are role models for the idea that learning never ends and can happen in a number of settings.
You can find our recent graduates at colleges and universities
throughout the nation. Our 900 alumni are an important
presence in a broad spectrum of professions and in their
communities.
The point to keep in mind: Glenelg
graduates are making the choices that are best for them.
