Glenelg Country School (GCS) is excited to offer Virtual Summer Academic Courses.

Classes developing core academic skills will be offered in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics in addition to instruction in world languages to older students. These courses have been designed to offer review of skills and provide additional practice and application for students.

All GCS students (current and newly enrolled) may attend the classes at no charge. Students from beyond the GCS community are welcome to join the classes for the stated fees. We look forward to providing a great virtual program.

  • Author Study: Chris VanAllsburg (Grades 4–5)

    Did you love the story “Jumanji” or “The Polar Express?” Chris VanAllsburg is the author of many awesome picture books that explore elements of fantasy and reality. This two-week class will have pre-recorded videos to introduce the book of the day and prepare students for the daily 45-minute online class where students will discuss elements of fantasy and reality as well as similarities and differences between the different stories. Students will also receive writing instruction as they create their own story. Students should plan to spend 15 minutes prior to the daily online session to view the pre-recorded video and then 30 minutes to complete independent work after the live session.

  • Book Club: “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (Grades 3–5)

    Students participating in this book club will read assigned chapters and complete comprehension activities from the book prior to the daily online session. Students will create a one-of-a-kind chocolate factory room at the end of the club. Participants should plan to spend 30 minutes prior to each daily online session and about 30 minutes after the online session to complete independent work.

  • Go for Good Grammar (Grades 3–5)

    Students will practice basic grammar skills and apply to a week-long writing project. Grammar concepts to include nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, use of commas and so much more. A pre-recorded lesson will be posted prior to the live 30-minute lesson, and students will have about 30 minutes of independent work each day.   • Introduction to Calculus (Grades 9–12)

    Students will solidify their understanding of solving and graphing functions, including linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, logarithmic, and exponential functions. There will be an in depth look at trigonometric functions: graph trigonometric functions, manipulate trigonometric expressions using identities, and solve right and oblique triangle problems. Students will also get a glimpse at the first topics that will be covered in Calculus. This course will meet for six weeks with two hours of synchronous meeting time per week and approximately two hours of individual preparation time per week.

    Focuses of reading fluency and oral proficiency through the study of selected classical texts. This class is appropriate for students who have completed Latin 3 or Latin 4 and is an ideal preparation for AP Latin. Students will meet synchronously three times per week for approximately 45 minutes using the Microsoft Teams platform and complete approximately one and a half to two hours per week of individual preparation over four weeks.

    Students learn Latin vocabulary and grammar in context and are introduced to aspects of Greek myth through passages in English from the “Odyssey.” The class stresses reading fluency and oral proficiency through use of the introductory Latin reader “Ego, Polyphemus.” Students will meet synchronously three times per week for approximately 45 minutes using the Microsoft Teams platform and complete approximately one and a half to two hours per week of individual preparation over four weeks. This class is appropriate for middle school or high school students with at least one year of Latin. For GCS students, this is course is suitable for those who have completed Latin 6, Latin 7, or Latin 8.

The class stresses reading fluency and oral proficiency through use of an intermediate Latin reader, Lhomond’s “Epitome Historicae Sacrae.” Students will meet synchronously three times per week for approximately forty-five minutes using the Microsoft Teams platform and complete approximately one and a half to two hours per week of individual preparation over four weeks. The class is appropriate for students who have successfully completed Latin I or Latin II (i.e., 2-3 years of middle school Latin or 1-2 years of high school Latin). For GCS students, this is course is suitable for those who have completed Latin 8, Latin I or Latin II.

The class stresses reading fluency and oral proficiency through use of an introductory Latin reader, “Lars Romam Odit.” Students will meet synchronously three times per week for approximately 45 minutes using the Microsoft Teams platform and complete approximately one and a half to two hours per week of individual preparation over four weeks. This class is appropriate for middle school Latin students in all grades and high school students with no Latin experience. For GCS students, this is course is suitable for those who have completed Latin 6 or Latin 7, or for any student beginning Latin study in the fall.

    Students will engage in exciting mysteries, which will support growth in mathematical thinking and problem-solving.   • Math: Number Sense Session (Pre-K–Kindergarten)

    Does your child need support with recognizing and counting one-to-one correspondence, numerically ordering, and identifying numbers 1–50? During this 30-minute class that meets online through Microsoft Teams, the teacher and student will play online math games, participate in activities, create hands-on projects and crafts, and engage in online teacher-led math lessons to further develop the child's number sense. The group will meet for 30 minutes each day, and children will be expected to practice independently for 20–30 minutes per day.

  • Reading Comprehension and Writing Workshop (Grades 9–12)

    In this six-week workshop, students will explore a variety of texts of their choosing to understand how writers do what they do. Each week, we will write a response to the work we are reading that lets each student explore writing in several different modes. Students will meet synchronously using the Microsoft Teams platform twice a week with the instructor and the whole group as well as once a week with their writing group and once a week with their analysis group, for a total of four synchronous hours per week, in addition to approximately four hours of asynchronous preparation time (reading, writing and revising). On their own, students will write one short piece every week that will be shared with the group on Fridays. Students will enrich their skills in reading comprehension, analysis, and writing in an array of styles.

    Read and sequencing strategies to work on comprehension, fluency, and building confidence will be presented in this class. In additions, students will learn beginning, middle, and ending parts of a story as well as learning to retell a story previously read.   • The Wonder Journal: Noticing Wonder (Grade 2)

    Using a variety of mediums, students will think and write about what brings them joy and inspires curiosity and awe. Using student suggested topics as well as instructor driven topics, students will write daily during class time for 10 minutes followed by a focus on a concentrated topic. Topics include editing, re-writing, expanding on a topic, and illustrating to expand an idea. Students are encouraged to write daily outside of class time for a minimum of 20 minutes per day.

  • Writing Brush Up....Writing for Various Purposes (Grades 4–5)

    Class will meet for 30 minutes Monday–Thursday for two weeks. Students will review a writing style as a class on Mondays and Wednesdays and then write a paragraph(s) independently. The paragraph will be submitted to the teacher by 4 pm that day. The teacher will hold an individual session with each student on Tuesdays and Thursdays to go over the paragraph(s) they have written. During this two-week class, students will review and practice four genres of writing including small moments, persuasive writing, informative writing, and creative writing.
